Description

The Wild Rumpus is a UK based collective who curate and produce infamous international indie game events. Their flagship WILD RUMPUS parties are part arcade, part club night, part something wild and untamed that can’t quite be put into words. Whilst based in London they’ve curated nights from San Francisco to Austin to Toronto alongside a host of co-conspirators and sponsors including BBC Worldwide, Tumblr and Humble Bundle.

History

In the Beginning

Wild Rumpus was conceived in 2011 in the depths of a Swedish ex-slaughterhouse by Marie Foulston, Ricky Haggett and Richard Hogg and joined shortly afterwards by George Buckenham. Driven by a desire to bring the work of independent playful creators to new audiences and to turn traditional perceptions of videogames on their head. Their first event was in East London in September 2011 and attracted over 300 attendees and brought landmark local multiplayer games such as Johann Sebastian Joust to UK audiences for the first time.

And So...

Since then they’ve hosted over 10 events and seen audiences grow to over 1500 catching the eye of publications such as Wired, Edge and the Guardian along the way. They’ve teamed up with international partners and festivals including Venus Patrol, Fantastic Arcade and the Art Gallery of Ontario to take their events to new shores. As well as welcoming new collaborators Alice O’Connor and Patrick Ashe to the team.

Beyond Wild Rumpus

2013 saw them expand beyond their original party nights to be commissioned to host RUMPUS ROYALE (the first ever world indie e-sports world championships) as part of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, returning again in 2014 to host MILD RUMPUS, a milder arcade counterpart to their night time events.

Tenya Wanya Teens

Beyond events they've also worked alongside Uvula’s Keita Takahashi (Katamari Damacy) and Asuka Sakai, and Venus Patrol’s Brandon Boyer to develop 2 player party game TENYA WANYA TEENS “a coming-of-age tale about love, hygiene, monsters and finding discarded erotic magazines in the woods”.
